IO-Link Opens Up New Areas of Application

Profibus & Profinet International - IO-Link is continuing on a highly expansionary course of growth. This is expressed both by the number of nodes and the variety of different devices. IODDfinder now lists more than 11,000 different devices, making it the largest database for sensors and actuators with IO-Link. With 700,000 accesses per month, IODDfinder has become a primary tool for the IO-Link community.

A Standardized Plug System for PROFINET over SPE

Profibus & Profinet International - With its array of technologies, PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET International) stands for a multitude of innovations and cross-manufacturer interoperability - starting with the connectivity of plugs and cables. This has already been achieved today with two- and four-pair Ethernet cabling, but now the story of success continues with Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) - a plug connector for industrial automation.

PROFINET Certification of Virtual Controller and Device Instances

Profibus & Profinet International - Virtual controllers and devices are a perfect example of the IT/OT convergence which plays a decisive role for PROFINET in automation technology. With the technical advancements being made in virtualization technology and the growing demand for virtual controllers and devices, PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI) has adapted the PROFINET certification process accordingly and reached an important milestone with the PROFINET Test Bundle V2.45.0 released in August of 2024.

New Virtual Meeting Place for Technology Enthusiasts

Profibus & Profinet International - With the PROFINET Ecosystem Platform, PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET International) has set up a virtual collaboration space for anyone who would like to actively play a part in the future of PROFINET technology. A center of knowledge for developers and product managers is being established with a new PROFINET website (www.profinet.com) and the associated PROFINET Community Forum.

A new liaison: IT/OT convergence by combining IO-Link and mioty

Profibus & Profinet International - The IO-Link community and the mioty alliance are increasing their collaborative efforts and will cooperate more closely in the future. To this end, they’ve created a joint working group focusing on the adaptation of IO-Link (IODD) data models and their seamless integration into the mioty standard. The aim of this close alliance is to enable low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) technologies for industrial IO-Link applications.

Over 100 million PROFIBUS and PROFINET devices in use

Profibus & Profinet International - Despite challenges brought about by the pandemic, products featuring technology from PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI) have been very well accepted by users. With the total number of PROFIBUS and PROFINET products so far installed at plants has exceeded 104 million, an impressive threshold has been crossed. On a yearly basis, PROFINET has beaten all previous records with a total of 7.3 million products placed on the market.

Technical Work on OPC UA Safety Completed

Profibus & Profinet International - PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI) spoke out at an early stage in favor of OPC UA as an open, cross-vendor standard for machine-to-machine communication. However, to round out the technology, a standard for fail-safe communication had been lacking at this level. This problem has been resolved by the specification “OPC Unified Architecture, Part 15: Safety,” a joint development of the OPC Foundation and PI. The technical work has now been completed.
