umati linking the old and the new in “brownfield” Hackathon

VDW - What is the best way to connect old machines to new systems? This was the very question that spurred umati, the connectivity initiative of the mechanical and plant engineering industry, to organize a hackathon in cooperation with the international United Grinding Group. A total of 30 digitalization experts from 17 companies attended the networking event in Steffisburg, Switzerland.

Wireless manufacturing could be standard practice in ten years

VDW - "The hardware for 5G manufacturing solutions will be on the market in two to three years," predicts Jan Mertes from FBK Kaiserslautern. The production research assistant is one of the leaders of the "5G Kaiserslautern" project aimed at exploring different use cases for 5G. "This will enable many more companies to make their production more flexible because it allows them to save considerable amounts of time, effort and costs compared to current practice."

Open community driving machine tool industry forwards

VDW - 'umati' allows machines from different manufacturers to be linked – securely, simply and smoothly – to customers' own digital solutions. Based on OPC UA as the "global language of production", it considerably simplifies the connection of machine tools to production-related IT systems. The alliance (launched in 2017 by the VDW – German Machine Tool Builders' Association) will be participating in the METAV digital from 23 to 26 March 2021.

Umati

Productivity.be - Umati - which stands for “universal machine technology interface” - is an OPC-UA accompanying specification that contains a standardized data model to allow industrial machines and software applications to communicate with each other. Using standardized labels, Umati want to define parameters and settings of machines unambiguously so that they become universally recognizable. (updated)

New corporate culture in smart factories

VDW - The digitalisation and networking of entire factory floors and the new processes in Industry 4.0 scenarios are raising ever more questions surrounding the role which employees play in this environment. Above all, the dynamics of production lines supported by artificial intelligence (AI) necessitate giving human beings working at machines greater decision-making authority and responsibility than many organisational charts provide for at present.

METAV digital to showcase solutions for more flexible value chains

VDW - The reliability of supply chains has become one of the major topics of discussion since the beginning of the corona pandemic. Some organisations are struggling to procure masks and vaccines, others are having to contend with suppliers with furloughed employees or disruptions in the raw materials market. And major imponderables such as trade conflicts and political influence hover over everything.

Pushing forward digitalisation in the machine tool industry with intelligent algorithms and platform technology

VDW - The VDW (German Machine Tool Builders' Association), Frankfurt am Main, has acquired a minority stake in Munich-based Spanflug Technologies GmbH. The contract was signed last November. The start-up has been operating since 2018 and was spun off from the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management (iwb) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

METAV reloaded 2020: Overcoming the crisis with digital twins

VDW - "Falling quantities, a shortage of skilled workers, and now corona – how am I supposed to machine any components effectively?" Answers to this question will be provided at METAV reloaded 2020. Two words which are certain to be heard in March 2021 are: automation and digitalisation. Automation experts from GE Digital, Open Mind and Siemens will be revealing their ideas and solutions for efficient and future-proof factories.

Automation and Handling are the focus of the METAV Web Sessions

VDW - Automation and handling are increasingly gaining in significance as mega trends in industrial manufacturing. The problem of skilled workers is becoming ever more serious, especially in these difficult times when many companies are under pressure from high costs. At the same time, there are enormously high demands on the quality of products, meaning that businesses are now well advised to consider automation.

Let’s talk about innovation

VDW - The METAV organiser VDW (German Machine Tool Builders' Association), Frankfurt am Main, is inviting all those interested to take part in its METAV Web Sessions – entitled "Let's talk about innovation" – from 15 to 19 June 2020.

Safety as a strategic process

VDW - The European Machinery Directive is probably the most important set of machine safety regulations; it is currently being reviewed. The EU Commission is planning a new version. However, the messages emerging from the Commission are causing unease among companies and associations alike. The underlying objectives of the review, such as adapting to technical progress, may find broad agreement, yet the devil, as so often, lies in the detail.
