Radar Sensors—Defying the Elements

The new industrial radar sensors from Pepperl+Fuchs are optimized for distance and speed measurements at medium ranges of over 25 m. The sensor operates according to the frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) method. The devices are able to precisely determine the distance, direction of movement and speed of objects in the sensing range.

Designed especially for outdoor use under the harshest conditions, the physical properties of this technology when used in the 122 GHz ... 123 GHz frequency band include high resistance to interference such as rain, mist, wind, dust and temperature fluctuations.

Due to its increased electromagnetic compatibility and integrated CANopen interface configured to comply with CiA301, the sensors are designed for use in applications in the mobile equipment and material handling sectors. The CAN interface enables direct and easy integration into CAN networks. The ruggedness and capability of the sensors bring with them added properties, such as the rugged and compact cubic housing of the L2 series, high IP68/69 degree of protection, an extended temperature range of -40 °C ... 70 °C, and various connection plugs (M12, AMP, DEUTSCH, and fixed cable).

One such added functionality is the option to operate the sensors in safety applications up to performance level c or safety integrity level 1, or PL d/SIL 2 by implementing redundancy via a safety concept that evaluates the suitability of the sensors based on their diagnostic capability in the application. A wide range of parameterization properties and added functionalities via the CANopen interface in the CAN network itself, or alternatively via the PACTware FDT framework program and a DTM, offer the sensors maximum flexibility in all types of applications.
