ODVA

ODVA is an international standards development and trade organization with members from the world’s leading automation suppliers. ODVA’s mission is to advance open, interoperable information and communication technologies for industrial automation. Its standards include the Common Industrial Protocol or “CIP,” ODVA’s media independent network protocol – and industrial communication technologies including EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet and others. For interoperability of production systems and their integration with other systems, ODVA embraces the adoption of commercial-off-the-shelf, standard Internet and Ethernet technologies as a guiding principle. This principle is exemplified by EtherNet/IP – today’s leading industrial Ethernet network.

EtherNet/IP Adds Process Device Profile Support for Enhanced Process Variable and Diagnostic Standardization

ODVA - ODVA announced today that process device profiles have been added to The EtherNet/IPTM Specification to provide automation practitioners with another critical tool to help optimize plant operations. Process device profiles provide a standard format for process variables and diagnostics across an array of devices for smoother vendor interoperability and easier DCS and PLC data integration from EtherNet/IP-enabled field devices.

CIP Security Enhanced to Support Resource-Constrained EtherNet/IP Devices

ODVA - CIP SecurityTM, the cybersecurity network extension for EtherNet/IPTM, has added support for resource-constrained EtherNet/IP devices. CIP Security can now provide device authentication, a broad trust domain, device identity via Pre-Shared Keys (PSKs), device integrity, and data confidentiality for resource-constrained devices such as contactors and push-buttons. A narrow trust domain, user authentication, and policy enforcement via a gateway or a proxy are available options.

CIP Security updated to support user level authentication

ODVA - ODVA announces that user level authentication has been added to CIP Security, the cybersecurity network extension for EtherNet/IP. Previous publications of the specifications for CIP Security included key security properties including a broad trust domain across a group of devices, data confidentiality, device authentication, device identity, and device integrity. CIP Security now adds a narrow trust domain by user and role.

ODVA enters into agreement with FDT and Fieldcomm Group and continues XDS development

ODVA - ODVA announced today that it has entered into separate agreements to further integrate FDT and FDI technologies into EtherNet/IP. Additional device description work on the next generation xDS for CIP devices also continues to move forward. “ODVA is committed to making EtherNet/IP a best in class communication network for both the discrete and process industries” said Dr. Al Beydoun, President and Executive Director of ODVA.

OPC UA companion specification to be developed for CIP

ODVA - ODVA announced today that it has launched a joint working group with the OPC Foundation to develop an OPC UA companion specification to the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP). The collaboration will result in reliable, secure communications between devices that are a part of a CIP-enabled Industrial Control System (ICS) and other OPC UA enabled applications as well as with cloud and enterprise level services.
